Year in Review

Thought I'd copy People magazine and provide an Ammon family year in review. It will be nice to reflect a little...2009 has been a year of ups, downs and changes for us. Keep reading, as some of the changes we have experienced might be news to you...we've had to keep a few secrets here at the end of the year. OOOOH, now your interest is peaked....

We began 2009 with me in my final year of my master's in nursing program and in a very similar state as now....pregnant! Elias endured his first urgent care experience in January after a bump at Nana's house to his right forehead. Little did we know that this was only the beginning... This trip required Dermabond, a product we would come to be quite familiar with (does anyone know how to invest in their stock?)

In early February, we headed to the VA mountains for some skiing and vacation with our favorite Ammon fam, planning a week of fun in the snow and a big 3-year-old birthday celebration for Elias. Things turned out a little different for us there....Christopher caught some horific GI bug which forced us to keep him quarantined in a rear bedroom. He skied ONE day. Katie and I went through approximately 4,976 clorox wipes, but successfully kept the rest of the Ammon clan from getting sick.

Then we began a journey through a valley we hadn't visited since before Elias was born, but one whose pain is never forgotten, once experienced. And we had experienced it twice already. During this winter vacation, I began to miscarry our baby, after 12 weeks of loving her and even after seeing her heartbeat. This time was different...this pain was deeper. We named this baby Ellie and said goodbye with a private little ceremony by the river. Even as I write today, tears flow, thinking that though I will never hold her here on earth, I will kiss her sweet face in heaven someday. And sometimes, in times of grief, that is what God gives...hope for the future.

After the last late snow in March, Spring appeared and we spent a lot of time outdoors. We took a long weekend trip to Myrtle Beach and made a couple trips, as always, to Charlotte, this time to celebrate Katiebug's birthday and meet a different Katie's Eli. We traveled to VA, canoed the Eno (my first time ever!) and enjoyed the new life Spring always brings.

May was a busy month with visits from Papa T, Nana T and Aunt Ash. We had friends over for a campfire in our newly fashioned fire pit. We also found ourselves in the ER this month with a boy vs. bench incident. We again, met our friend, Dermabond. We also took a big trip to Florida. This was not Elias' first plane ride, but was definitely the first he would remember. We had a blast with the Brutscher side of the family (Christopher's mom's side).

Summer included lots of slip-n-slide time and Christopher's solo trip out to Oregon for our dear friend, Kimary's 30th. I would have joined him, but we were making plans (and saving PTO!) for a new baby on the way! Could excited, hopeful and nervous even begin to describe how we felt?!
We took another trip to the beach, this time to Edisto Island with Nana and enjoyed some some SC sun. The potty training began after this trip and we entered a whole new world of big boy underwear, encouraging independence and no diapers! What a roller coaster that has been and one I think we will be riding for some time. It's no easy task to grow a little boy!

In July, we also spent more time in the emergency department, this time graduating to a little sedation and many stitches. And we were on a first name basis with the ED staff. A trip to New Orleans in August was filled with streetcars and lots of eating, topped off with a case of food poisoning (Elias).

In September, we celebrated my 29th birthday and discovered that our family would be girls: 1, boys: 3. That's right, we saw a penis on the ultrasound and so I had to start erasing all my dreams of pink tulle and ballet slippers! We settled on the name Ethan (still working on that middle name) and began planning for another boy in our lives.

Fall brought changes to both the beautiful trees that surround our house and some changes in our family's journey. We had to make some big decisions as we faced my graduate program ending and this new baby boy coming. It was a monumental time in our family's history as we set priorities and talked about the sacrifices we would need to make in the next several months. It came down to some number crunching and soul searching (not sure if these two always happen at the same time, but they did for us!) and we made some HUGE decisions. And here, they are, in no particular order....

1. Christopher will leave his job as a park ranger when Ethan is born to be a stay-at-home Dad.

Ok, yeah. Maybe you should just let that sink in.

Next...
2. Because Christopher's job includes a house, we had to buy our own! We closed November 16 on a brand spankin' new house and will move in soon...mid January-ish. Pictures to follow...we'll do a whole separate post on our new place.

3. Finally, though I am the proud owner of three new letters after my name (MSN), I will continue in my job after the baby's born and will stay at Duke to meet the work commitment of the tuition reimbursement I received.

If you are not saying WOW by now, then something is wrong with your shock and awe meter. Even if you are already in the know, you can appreciate where this year has brought us!

The end of the year has been kind of a blur, I must admit. It seems like October rolled through here like a steam engine (which we saw LIVE at Day out with Thomas this year) and now we find ourselves at the end of December. My posts on our more recent happenings, including Christopher turning 30, joining our church, dedicating Elias, are probably more recent in your mind, though just as monumental for us. These last few months have been a slam-bang finish to a very big year! Click HERE to go our shutterfly site to catch up on all the pictures and some video from Christmas. I have added quite a few albums, including our Thanksgiving with the Ammons (and Grandma, Grandpa and Granny K!) and all our Christmas activities.

We hope to see many of you in 2010...you'll want to say happy birthday to Elias (4 years old on Feb 6!) and come meet Ethan, of course (he's due to arrive sometime around Feb. 17-ish). And we'll save a spot for you on the futon at the new house...but hurry, reservations for 2010 are going fast!

Have a blessed new year and may your reflections on 2009 create both gratitude and joy as you see how MUCH we have to be thankful for and how truly good God has been to us all.

Milestones

This weekend, we celebrated several!
Christopher turned 30 (today, actually) and we celebrated with a few activities this weekend.

He canoed the Eno (which was roaring from the recent rain) with a buddy in the morning.

No ride is complete without a cheering section!

The whole family celebrated later with some cupcakes.

And thanks to Grandma and Nana, the Ammon couples enjoyed an adult evening of dinner, bowling, and dancing!

The other milestones involve our family as a whole. At our church today, Watts Street Baptist Church, we dedicated Elias to God in a small ceremony during the service, where we committed to teaching him about Jesus and our faith. Some of you might be wondering why we haven't done this before, as in a baptism or christening. Elias is almost 4, after all! I think the answer there is a little complicated for us spiritually(and I would be happy to share offline), but a very practical explanation is that we have not had a church home until now. We were both working so many weekends when he was born and never found a community of believers that we fit into spiritually. And before we knew it, almost 4 years has gone by.
The child dedication ceremony is so beautiful at our church...we have seen several of these since attending there, and I cry every time. The words, which I am sharing here, are so simple, yet touching. And my favorite part...after the congregation pledges their support, our pastor carries (or walks, in Elias' case) the child down the center aisle as he tells the child about how much Jesus loves them and how he died for them. Then the whole church sings "Jesus Loves Me."
It was so great to experience it with Elias today (and for him to cooperate famously!). For it to to be on Christopher's 30th birthday. And to think about how in light of the loss we have experienced this year and the two babies lost before even having Elias, just how precious his little life is and how eternally grateful I am to be able to raise him to know and love God. Needless to say, I cried during the ceremony, right there in front of the whole church!
Here's what was said:
Minister: Kristen and Christopher, do you sincerely desire that Elias shall grow up with faith, to become a follower of Christ?
Us: We do.

Minister: Kristen and Christopher, do you promise to inform Elias about the faith, to teach him the Scriptures, to pray with him and for him, and to use the programs and members of this church to lead him toward a full acceptance of God's love in Jesus Christ?
Us: We do.

As the pastor walked with Elias, here is what he said:
Elias, today we want you to know that God loves you. It was for you that God created the world-the sun, the moon, and stars. It was for you that God sent Jesus. It was for you that God sent this congregation to nurture you, and your parents, and grandparents to love you. We want you to know, before you ever understand it, that God's grace is given to you. The Lord bless you and keep you.

We ended the service today by officially joining Watts Street Baptist and were welcomed with the traditional greeting the congregation says in unison: "Thank God you're here." We were definitely thanking God, too, and continue to have gratitude in our hearts for where He has brought us and all the blessings we have experienced.

Here's to many more milestone in the years ahead...may God continue to guide us and shine his light on our lives.

Ammon Television

Here are some WAY overdue videos of the last few months. I have picked my favorites, but if you just can't get enough of Ammon television, go to youtube and search for my profile under "eeamom." I am pretty sure you can pull up all my videos that way. I am STILL working on picture uploading to our Shutterfly site. I need an assistant.

This one makes me laugh...from our New Orleans trip where Christopher and Elias are chasing after a train. But somewhere there is a siren, so it sounds like they are either running to an emergency or they are fugitives from the police!

A Duke football game cheer...this is for all the KY family...I did try and get one of Grandma, to show her assimilation to the ACC, but it didn't turn out! Here's her KY grandson cheering for DUKE instead!

Here is evidence that I kinda, sorta, wanted a girl this time. Just a little. It also reveals Elias' true desire to have both a brother AND a sister!

Christopher and his brother, Brian in a little friendly competition.

Singing happy birthday to Miss Taylor Grace...4 years old on Sept 26.

And here is Thomas the train coming to town!

TYLENOL RECALL

Attention all parents! Several kinds of infant's/children's Tylenol have been recalled. I just got an email about this at work.

The company has implemented this recall because examination of bulk raw material detected that one of the inactive ingredients did not meet internal testing requirements.Specifically, the gram-negative bacteria Burkholderia cepacia (B. cepacia) was detected. The portion of raw material in which the bacteria was found was isolated and was not used in the production of any finished product. However, it was decided, as a precaution, to recall all product that utilized any of the raw material manufactured at the same time as the raw material that tested positive for the bacteria. Please note: No bacteria has been detected in finished product and the finished product has met all specifications.

Here's US Recall News' list of 21 affected products. Click HERE to see the Tylenol website that has the LOT NUMBERS, which should be on the bottle.

a picture is worth a thousand words...

but THESE are worth a million!

BABY AMMON

Gestational age according to my last ultrasound was around 18 weeks...this baby is measuring more like 17 weeks, which changes the due date to February 24. Only time will tell...

In the picture below, the cloudy thing on the left side of the face is the placenta...

And the finale...the moment we've all been waiting for:

IT'S A BOY!

We actually got a sneek peak of this baby boy a couple of weeks ago, but I have been adjusting to the life of boys ahead of me! Elias, too, has had to adjust. He has been saying whenever we ask him what he wants that he wants "a brother AND a sister." When we had the ultrasound two weeks ago, we caught him on video saying "there's only one? No sister?" I am working on getting it uploaded. It's pretty funny! We have chosen a name, too, though we are working on the middle name. We didn't choose Elias' middle name (Everett) until a month before he was born, so we figure we have some time. And we welcome any suggestions!

Ethan ____________ Ammon

Spent my birthday weekend with my Mom and Ashley in Myrtle Beach. We shopped, hung out on the beach and ate amazing croissants dripping with honey butter at the Boundary House restaurant. I missed my boys at home, but what a treat to think only of myself for a weekend!

Way behind on picture uploading...will update when I have the summer loaded into our shutterfly site. In the meantime, check out my sister-in-law, Katie's, blog for fun pictures from out trip to VA.

the P's of our lives

Potty training
I think it's safe to say we have done it! We started way back on July 20 with a kickoff "Potty Party" as recommended by the book Potty Train Your Child in Just One Day. While it was more like one month instead of one day, it was a great and exciting way to start off the process. We own the book, so if anyone wants to borrow it, just let me know. It was pretty stressful during that time and Elias was not always a willing participant, but very quickly picked up on his urges and making it to the potty. In fact, rather than having stinky accidents, we had a 4-day episode of constipation where he refused to go at all! But now, a month later, he tells us (still rather last minute) when he has to go and we reward with stickers and a treat (either M&M or skittle). Overall, we've had very few accidents. And any parent can attest, there is nothing like the joy of seeing your little one's heinie (as Aunt Katie would say) in big boy/girl pants. We are so proud of you Buddy!

Pregnancy
Okay, so this is a big P!!!! I am 15 weeks pregnant now and well on our way to meeting another Ammon baby in February. My due date at this point is 2/17...11 days after E's birthday! We have had four ultrasounds and even heard the heartbeat once at 12 weeks, a point we never got to with our Ellie back in February. I have even felt and SEEN movement...confirmed by Christopher, who I called home so he could verify what I was seeing. I thought I was hallucinating. To me, it was no coinicidence that the day we saw this beautiful sign of life, it was my due date with Ellie: August 19. It seemed to be a message from God that he was turning my mourning into laughter and joy. It was wonderful. Those first few weeks of August were hard for me...thinking about how I would have been having a baby girl in my arms and still grieving her loss, while trying desperately to enjoy this new life inside me. I am getting there, slowly. Each day is more relief and more connection to this new baby. My expanding belly helps...it's so true what they say about subsequent pregnancies. I swear I look 6 months pregnant!

One of the most beautiful things...on this ultrasound, we actually saw arms and legs moving!

P
ictures
Maybe this weekend I can update our shutterfly site, but in the meantime, here are some picture highlights of the last month or so.

a quick trip to Edisto Island with Nana

A late July trip to the ED...this trip resulting from a different bench and requiring an IV, sedation and both internal and external stitches.

a mid-August trip to New Orleans

Peace
Definitely not as action oriented as our other P's, but the most important P as we strive for God's leading in these busy times. Please Pray (there's two more P's!) for us as we make decisions for our growing family and learn each and every day how to be better parents (hey-there's another one!) to Elias. We see this as our highest calling and recognize it is the most challenging, yet the most rewarding. We are raising a human being! The answers and methods are not always black and white, which leaves me with a lot of anxiety over if we are doing the right things or doing things the right way. Although our days are not always peace-ful, we try to be peace-filled and take each day one at a time. And entrust our son and future baby to God! That is true peace.

Love to all...

A nephew on the way...

We are thrilled to announce that Brian, Katie and Taylor Grace are expecting a baby boy through adoption in November! Please pray for them as they anxiously await his arrival and go through the difficult and lengthy process of background checks, home visits and check writing. Their story can be read here, and we hope anyone who is considering growing their family will be inspired. Congratulations Ammon fam!

Big Boy, Proud Mama

Because I removed the second engorged tick from Elias' head today, which had probably been there a few days hiding under the mass of hair, I decided enough was enough. No, I did not decide to pack our bags and head for more skyscrapers and less trees. I decided to GET HIS HAIR CUT. All by myself....after work and daycare....with Christopher miles away in Oregon.

And guess what?!

WE DID IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

We went to Great Clips. He sat in my lap while watching WordWorld (his new favorite video series), fussed a little, but didn't fight AT ALL. It was done in 15 minutes. We had talked about being a big boy all the way there and if he sat still, we could pick out anything at Walmart. It was amazing! I think I feel just as proud as when he started walking. Nothing compares to the feeling of pride and knowing that something you have worked so hard for, something you wish would be better, has finally come to fruition. It was like starting a new chapter in Elias' little life. He is growing up!

I have a ton of homework to do and /or should probably be in bed, but I just HAD to share!

New pictures

Check out our Shutterfly share site...new pictures, including our big trip to Florida.

Click HERE or on the right under the "PICTURES" tab.

Here a few videos from our Florida trip to celebrate Courtney's (Christopher's cousin) graduation. We had so much fun living at the Residence Inn (fabulous hotel for kids!), hanging out at Aunt Susie's pool and eating at one of my favorite places...Mimi's Cafe! Elias and I flew down and then met up with Christopher and Carol, who rode a train down there. It was Elias' first plane ride in his memory (he had flown at 6mos to see Nana) and it was really fun for him to see all the planes and be at the airport. He was not a fan of the lines or takeoff, which I discovered unintentionally in this video. He did better on the way home, but kept saying he felt "funny" whenever he could feel the plane in motion. I hate to say it, but the boy got his looks from his Dad and his motion sickness from his Mama! He liked the shuttle bus most of all, as evidenced by this grin, despite the early hour.

On our way to Lakeland, we stopped into see my oldest friend Shannon and her little guy, Chase. It was high in quality, not quantity as we couldn't stay long. Here is a picture of our boys together. I know our Moms are screaming that we didn't take a picture with US in it, but really, this was hard enough! Shannon and I know we were there! = )

The BEST part of the whole trip...
